Formerly know as the Phoenix, and a free venue for a number of
years, The
Broughton bar is a fully refurbished and friendly modern bar that is open from lunchtime,
with a full bar, bar menu an restaurant - right the
way through until late night. The crowd is a mixture of
locals, tourists, and regular Fringe goers and performers who
know that it is the place to stop off for food on the way into
town. It's proximity to the group of venues near the top of
Broughton Street and Leith Walk makes it ideal for shows, and it
has been popular with audiences. Broughton street is a busy road
filled with bars and restaurant, and is a popular Edinburgh
evening destination.
Broughton street and many of the venues in the area are also
associated with the Edinburgh LGBT community, and the
has been very successful in it's programming of LGBT shows, alongside
a wide variety of comedy, theatre, cabaret and music.
It
is a popular bar for food, drink and sports on TV and the main
bar has a mezzanine level, along with large bar area, with the
performance space located in the basement beneath.
Performance
Space: The Basement Bar

Stage: 4m (wide) by 1m (deep) stage, on flat floor. Can be made
larger by removing seating. Main venue entrance can be used as
stage entrance/exit during show, and there is an area that can
be used as a backstage area.
- Seating: Capacity 60 people, fully seated. It is a larger space than
when it was set up as the Phoenix, with a smaller bar area.

Lighting: 1xPar Can located begin the bar, and small ceiling spotlights.
- Sound: 4 Channel Mixer, cables for MP3 player, with 2 Mics, Cables and Mic
stands. Performers own sound equipment can be added easily
- AV: There
is no AV equipment in this room
- Storage: There is a very small area for equipment at the venues
cellar for props
and equipment, shared with other groups
- Bar: The bar in the room is not open, and audiences use the
upstairs main bar.
- Access: The performance space is located down a flight of stairs so
is not wheelchair accessible
